Types of Thermocouples

Thermocouples of Base Metals

The thermocouples of base metals are types E, T, N, J, and K etc. known as the most common categories. The material from which these thermocouples are made are inexpensive and commonly available metals such as iron, copper, and nickel etc.

Thermocouples of Refractory Metals

The thermocouples of refractory metals are the considered as the last category of thermocouples which can be manufactured. These thermocouples are created from certain exotic metals which are rare and costly as well such as Rhenium and Tungsten etc.

Advantages of Thermocouples

High Measurement Accuracy

Because the thermocouple is in direct contact with the object being measured, it is not affected by the intermediate medium.

Wide Measurement Range

Commonly used thermocouples can measure continuously from -50~+1600℃℃. Some special thermocouples can measure as low as -269℃ (such as gold, iron, nickel, chromium) and as high as +2800℃ (such as tungsten-rhenium).

Simple Structure And Easy To Use

Thermocouples are usually composed of two different metal wires, and are not limited by size and opening. They have a protective sleeve outside, which is very convenient to use.

Working Principle of Thermocouples

The working principle of thermocouples is based on the thermoelectric effect (also known as the Seebeck effect). This effect describes the phenomenon of generating an electromotive force (EMF) when two different metals are joined and exposed to different temperatures at their junctions.

Basic Principle of the Thermoelectric Effect

When two different metals or alloys, A and B, form a closed loop with their junctions at different temperatures, an EMF is generated in the loop. The magnitude of this EMF is proportional to the temperature difference between the two junctions. By measuring this EMF, the temperature can be inferred.

Structure of a Thermocouple

A typical thermocouple consists of two dissimilar metal wires joined at one end, forming a junction called the "hot junction" or "measuring junction." The other ends are connected to a reference point known as the "cold junction" or "reference junction." When the hot junction is exposed to the temperature being measured, and the cold junction is kept at a known temperature, an EMF is generated in the circuit. This EMF value can be used to determine the temperature at the hot junction.

Application of Thermocouples

Oil and Gas Industry
In the oil and gas industry, temperature measurement is critical for ensuring safety and efficiency throughout exploration, extraction, transportation, and refining processes. Thermocouples are widely used to monitor and control temperatures in refineries, natural gas processing plants, pipelines, and storage tanks.

Chemical Industry
In chemical production, many processes require precise temperature control. Thermocouples are used in reactors, distillation columns, condensers, and other equipment to monitor temperatures, ensuring smooth chemical reactions and stable product quality.

Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical industry requires high-precision temperature control during production, storage, and transportation of drugs. Thermocouples are used in sterilization, drying, and cold chain transport processes to monitor temperatures in real-time, ensuring the quality and safety of pharmaceuticals.

Food and Beverage Industry
Temperature control in the food and beverage industry directly affects product quality and safety. Thermocouples are used in sterilization, baking, fermentation, and refrigeration processes, ensuring products are produced and stored under optimal temperature conditions.

Power Industry
In the power industry, thermocouples are used to monitor the temperatures of boilers, turbines, and generators. Accurate temperature measurement helps optimize equipment operating conditions, improving efficiency and safety.

Aerospace Industry
In the aerospace sector, thermocouples are used to monitor the temperatures of aircraft engines, spacecraft, and electronic equipment, ensuring they operate correctly in extreme environments. Temperature control is crucial for ensuring the performance and reliability of aerospace equipment and materials.

Automotive Manufacturing Industry
During automotive manufacturing, thermocouples are used to monitor the temperatures in engine testing, welding processes, and painting operations. Precise temperature control is essential for ensuring the performance and quality of automotive components.

Maintain of Thermocouples

1

Calibration Frequency

Thermocouple calibration will gradually decline at varying rates depending on the application. The calibration frequency should be determined by the user in each case. Heat transfer compounds are available.

2

Achieving Calibration

Calibration is achieved by comparing the thermocouple output with a working standard. Preferably, calibrate the thermocouple in its installed position. If the sensor is removed for calibration, it should be returned to the same location and immersion depth for maximum reliability.

3

Regular Inspection

Periodically inspect the thermowell and sensor sheath surfaces for corrosion or damage. If damage occurs, replacement may be considered.

4

Prevent Moisture Accumulation

Moisture can cause corrosion and de-calibration in some thermocouple wires (e.g., the positive leg of a J-type thermocouple is iron and rusts easily). Take care to prevent moisture buildup on thermocouple wire terminals.

FAQ

Q: What are the advantages of a thermocouple?

A: Thermocouples are essential temperature sensors widely used in science and industry. One of the main advantages of thermocouples is that they can be made to suit almost any application. They can be made to be robust, fast responding and to measure a very wide temperature range.

Q: Why do we need thermocouple?

A: A thermocouple is a sensor that is used for measuring temperature. The thermocouple is a very popular sensor to its relatively low cost, interchangeability, wide measuring range, and reliability.

Q: What is the lifespan of a thermocouple?

A: In practice, thermocouple lifespan varies drastically by type and operating conditions. K-type thermocouples, the most common in industrial and heating applications, typically last 1 to 3 years in high-temperature environments (up to 1260°C) with regular use.

Q: What are the three effects of thermocouple?

A: There are three major effects involved in a thermocouple circuit: the Seebeck, Peltier, and Thomson effects. The Seebeck effect describes the voltage or electromotive force (EMF) induced by the temperature difference (gradient) along the wire.

Q: Can a thermocouple be cleaned?

A: If the thermocouple tip is only lightly corroded or covered in dust/debris, cleaning may restore functionality. But if you find any cracks, bent wires, or significant corrosion pitting on inspection, replacement is the safest option.
