Advantages of A Bimetallic Thermometer

Durability

Bimetal thermometers are highly durable and can withstand harsh environments. They are resistant to mechanical stress, making them ideal for industrial applications where reliability is crucial.

01

No Need for Power

Unlike electronic thermometers, bimetallic thermometers do not require batteries or external power sources. This makes them ideal for situations where a power supply is unavailable or unreliable.

02

Wide Temperature Range

Bimetal thermometers can measure temperatures ranging from -50°C to 500°C, making them suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications.

03

Simple Design

The simple mechanical design of bimetal thermometers means that they are easy to use and maintain. There are fewer parts that could fail, reducing the likelihood of malfunctions.

04

Cost-Effective

Due to their simplicity and lack of complex electronic components, bimetal thermometers are often more affordable than digital or electronic thermometers.

Types of A Bimetallic Thermometer

Spiral Type Bimetallic Thermometer

The designing of this thermometer can be done by wrapping the bimetallic strip into this thermometer. The inside of the spiral can be connected in the direction of the housing, and a pointer can be connected to the outside of the spiral. The temperature which is measured can be read off a standardized scale.

Helical Type Bimetallic Thermometer

In many situations, it is essential to detach the pointer from the bimetallic coil. The temperature sensor must be placed in the pipe and the temperature can be displayed at the outside of the pipe.

Operating Principle of A Bimetallic Thermometer

A Bimetallic Thermometer work on the principle that solids expand or contracts depending on the temperature. As the name implies, these temperature measurement devices contain two strips of metal, each with a different expansion coefficient. This means that at the same temperature, the two metals will expand or contract at different rates. The materials are usually steel and copper or steel and brass, depending on the measuring range.

The two strips are welded or bonded together, formed into a helical or spiral coil, and placed in the thermometer’s stem. The bimetallic coil is affixed at the stem end, while the other end rotates and moves the pointer. As the temperature increases, the strip bends toward the metal with the lower temperature coefficient and creates a rotational movement in one direction. Conversely, as the temperature decreases, the strip bends toward the metal with the higher temperature coefficient and creates a rotational movement in the other direction.

Application of A Bimetallic Thermometer

1

Temperature Control Systems

These thermometers are often used to control heating and cooling devices. They can automatically switch systems on or off when a set temperature is reached.

2

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Bimetallic thermometers help monitor and regulate temperature in air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers. They are commonly used in thermostats to maintain desired temperature ranges, such as −20 °C in freezers or 2–8 °C in refrigerators.

3

Industrial Applications

In industries, these thermometers are used to monitor and control temperature in processes like oil refining, plastic molding, metal heating, and soldering. Helical-type thermometers are especially preferred, as they can measure higher temperatures, often up to 500 °C or more, and provide better accuracy.

4

Temperature Measurement and Indication

They are also used to measure and display temperature in liquids, gases, and solid surfaces. Common examples include measuring water temperature in pipelines, monitoring engine surfaces, and checking temperatures in boilers or storage tanks.

FAQ

Q: What are the advantages of a bimetallic thermometer?

A: Less expensive than other thermometers. They are fully mechanical and do not require any power source to operate. Easy installation and maintenance. Nearly linear response to temperature change.

Q: Are bimetallic thermometers durable?

A: Mechanical temperature instruments such as bimetal thermometers are commonly used because they provide a durable and easy-to-read local temperature indication without requiring external power.

Q: How accurate is a bimetallic thermometer?

A: Bimetallic thermometers are used to measure temperatures between −75°C and +1500°C. The inaccuracy of the best instruments can be as low as ±0.5%, but such devices are quite expensive.

Q: How does a bimetallic thermometer work?

A: The two strips are joined together inseparably and thus form the bimetal strip. When the temperature changes, the different metals expand to different degrees, which leads to a mechanical deformation of the bimetal strip. This mechanical deformation can be detected in a rotary movement.

Q: How far to insert a bimetallic thermometer?

A: For accurate temperature measurement, the probe of the bimetal coil thermometer must be inserted the full length of the sensing area (usually 2 to 3 inches).

Q: Are bimetallic thermometers accurate?

A: Bimetallic thermometers are ideal for situations where: High accuracy is not essential. They offer good accuracy for general temperature measurement but may not be suitable for applications requiring extreme precision.
