Advantages of Compensating Conductor
Extending the Thermocouple Connection
Thermocouples are typically installed in high-temperature environments, and it is impractical to use expensive thermocouple materials for long wiring. Compensating wires allow thermocouples to be extended to the measuring instrument economically.
Reducing Measurement Errors

If standard copper wires were used to connect a thermocouple to an instrument, additional thermoelectric junctions would be introduced at the connection points, creating extra voltage and leading to inaccurate temperature readings. Compensating wires match the thermocouple characteristics within a specific range to reduce these errors.
Cost Reduction

Thermocouples made of materials such as platinum and rhodium can be extremely expensive. Using compensating wires, which are made of more affordable but compatible alloys, significantly reduces the cost of a thermocouple system while maintaining accuracy.

Types of Compensating Conductor

Type KCA & KCB (for Type K Thermocouples)

Uses an Iron and Copper-Nickel alloy. KCA is rated for use up to 150 circ text, while KCB is rated for temperatures up to 100 circ text.

Type NC (for Type N Thermocouples)

Utilizes Copper and Copper-Nickel alloys. It provides a reliable connection while significantly reducing costs over long runs.

JX-J High Temperature Compensation Line
TX-T High Temperature Compensation Line

Type RCB & SCB (for Type R & S Thermocouples)

Made of Copper and Copper-Nickel alloys. Because Types R and S are made of expensive precious metals (Platinum-Rhodium), compensating conductors are the industry standard to save money without sacrificing measurement accuracy.

Type BC (for Type B Thermocouples)

Also utilizes a Copper and Copper-Nickel combination, ensuring accurate readings for Platinum-Rhodium thermocouples up to a maximum ambient temperature of 100 circ text.

Working principle of Compensating Conductor

In the working temperature, the thermoelectric performance and the thermoelectric performance of the thermocouple are similar to the wire, called the compensation wire of the thermocouple. According to the measurement of the intermediate temperature of the thermocouple, the total electric potential value of the thermocouple temperature measuring circuit is only affected by the temperature of the hot end and the reference end, and has nothing to do with the change of the intermediate temperature. Therefore, the compensating wire that is compatible with the thermocouple material can replace the expensive thermocouple raw material that needs to be extended, connect the reference terminal to the junction box of the instrument terminal through the thermocouple, and then use the compensation wire to control the temperature of the original reference terminal. compensate.

Maintain of Compensating Conductor

Inspection & Cleaning

Regularly inspect the winding slots and connection leads for carbon dust buildup, dirt, or debris, which can cause electrical arcing and short circuits.

Check Connections

Ensure all series connections to the armature are tight and secure. Loose connections will cause excessive heat and reduce commutation efficiency.

Varnish & Insulation Integrity

Over time, vibrations and heat can degrade insulation. Periodically test winding resistance and insulation resistance (Megger test) to ensure no grounds or shorts have developed.

Overheating Checks

Monitor the motor for unusual sparking at the brushes, which is often an early sign that the compensating winding or interpoles are not properly neutralizing the magnetic field.

FAQ

Q: Will using compensating cable affect my temperature readings?

A: Yes, but only slightly — and mainly if used outside its designed ambient range. Within ambient conditions, the difference is minimal for most industrial needs.

Q: Why not always use extension cable?

A: Extension cable offers higher accuracy but at a higher cost. In many cases, compensating cable provides a good balance between accuracy and cost efficiency.

Q: What is the difference between thermocouple wire and extension wire?

A: Extension-grade wire is used to connect thermocouples to measuring instruments, such as temperature controllers, indicators, or data loggers. Unlike thermocouple-grade wire, it is not intended for direct temperature sensing.

Q: What temperatures can PVC-insulated compensating cable handle?

A: PVC insulation typically handles up to around 70–105°C depending on the grade.

Q: What is the use of compensating cable?

A: A thermocouple compensating cable is a specialised cable that uses different, more economical alloys compared to true thermocouple extension cables. Its purpose is to extend the thermocouple signal from the sensor to the instrumentation accurately enough for ambient temperature conditions, but at a lower cost.
